Recognition of Prior Learning

E-mail Print PDF

What is RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), also known as Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) or Recognition, acknowledges what you have already learned from:

  • Work experience
  • Life experience (e.g.: Community work, hobbies etc)
  • Other courses or qualifications (e.g.: Formal or informal training)

The RPL process matches the skills and knowledge you already have against the course or qualification you are doing, or intend to do.  If what you have learned elsewhere is relevant to your course or qualification, you may not have to do some parts of the course or qualification.

RPL applications can take two forms:

Whole of Course RPL

When you are seeking RPL for all the units of competencies/modules in the entire qualification. Successful applicants will be awarded a Certificate for the relevant National Qualification.

Part Course RPL

You must be enrolled in the modules or units of competencies of the course or qualification for which you are seeking Part-Course RPL. Applicants for Part-Course RPL will first complete this application. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive advice on what requirements you will need to undertake to complete the Qualification and be invited into a suitable set of activities within our short course programming. You DO NOT need to submit a separate course application at the time of Part Course-RPL, we will provide you with all details such as costs and scheduling when invited to join the program.

What is Credit Transfer?

If you have successfully completed an identical module/competency at another educational institution or organization, then you should apply for a Credit Transfer.

Application for Credit Transfer forms are available from our office phone (03) 9903 0101.

In order to apply for a Credit Transfer, you must be enrolled in the course or qualification for which Credit Transfer is sought.  You must provide the original statement of attainment to support your application.

Why should I apply?

A successful application for RPL or Credit Transfer could mean:

  • You complete your course or qualification earlier than expected.
  • You study only subjects that are new and challenging
  • A reduced course load, leaving time for elective units, short courses and workshops.
  • Reduced course costs

What do I do?

You need to think about:

1. Previous formal study/training

If your previous course or qualification does not match up exactly with the one you are enrolled in, you complete an Application for Recognition of Prior Learning form.

If you have completed exactly the same module or competency elsewhere, you complete an Application for Credit Transfer form.  You will need to provide the relevant documentary evidence of your claim.

2. Work and life experience

If you have work experience or life experience which you think has give you relevant skills and knowledge, you should complete an Application for Recognition of Prior Learning form.  You may be required to attend an interview with the teaching department.

What happens if I decide to apply?

Copies of this Recognition of Prior Learning form or an Application for Credit Transfer can be obtained from our office by telephoning :(03) 9903 0101.  Once completed send form together with the Processing Fee of $100.00 to our office at the address on the next page.  If applying for part course RPL you will be invited to enroll in the units or modules for which you are seeking RPL.  There is no fee for Credit Transfer however you must be enrolled in the course or qualification for which Credit Transfer is sought.

What happens once I lodge my RPL application?

Your application for Recognition of Prior Learning form will be assessed and you will then be contacted on what to do next.  You may have to:

  • Give more details of your previous experience
  • Provide more material to support your claim (e.g.: references, certificates or samples of work)
  • Attend an RPL interview to discuss your previous experience.
  • Complete a test or “challenge” to confirm that your skills and knowledge match the outcome of the course qualification.
  • You may also be offered enrollment in our short course programming to attain the qualification in which you have sought RPL

What happens once I lodge my Credit Transfer application?

The Application for Credit Transfer form will be assessed and you will be advised of the outcome.

How much does it cost?

The fee for processing an RPL application is currently $100.00.  This fee is set annually and is non-refundable.

Can I get help?

Applicants may seek help from the Course Coordinator on (03) 9903 0100 to facilitate the process and identify what is required for your application.
